David Is an orphan and has lost a lot of people he cares deeply for; has a permanent case of the wistfuls over that. Most importantly, he is soul-bonded to an ancient, possibly-sentient giant canon, that he summons with an eyepatch that's fused to his head. Every time he uses it, it drains a portion of his soul; he'll probably die younger than normal, for it, like his father and his grandfather and--
